Season 2 of Netflix’s “Master of None” saw the career of lead character, Dev (Aziz Ansari), launch into the land of reality television. Major plot points revolve around Dev’s hosting gigs, beginning with “Clash of the Cupcakes” and culminating with some really unfortunate reveals regarding his co-host on his new show, “BFF’s”. SNC was tapped to create the GFX Show Packages for each.
for “Clash of the Cupcakes”, SNC’s Creative Director Chad Sikora flexed his character design and animation muscles, creating this ridiculous, graffiti gun-toting military general cupcake. This was a lot of fun to play around with, it’s not often we’re given creative license to push the envelope and make something that’ll genuinely make us laugh. some alt concepts we’d considered. Everyone loved option C but in the end it proved to be a bit too involved.
the second show, BFF’s, served as a major plot point and a potential turning point in Dev’s career. We won’t spoil it for you here, but a main idea for this show open was to paint Dev and his co-host as true best friends that do everything together. An easter egg to look for: the production didn’t want us to incorporate glossy “professional” travel and food photos, so we cut out the middle man and used shots we had on our phones from some resent vacations.
